George and Cliff Brown built Gunga Din as the first tuned 998 vincent twin. The factory racer then served as a prototype for the Black Shadow and was constantly developed as George and others raced it around the circuits of the U.K.

In 1936 Phil Vincent built a brace of supercharged 500 racers for the TT and Jack and the other riders tested them in practice but in spite of lots of work by Phil Irving they gave a lot of trouble and were no faster than the normal Vincent 500’s and were not used in the race.

John was an apprentice at Vincents and built his own much modified Grey Flash from a works ‘Hack’. He built it for spring 1951 and had many sucesses with it over the next two years before moving on to his illustrious climb to the world championships on two and four wheels.
